Additional Information   James left school at 12. His early career took him to the USA where he had a number of jobs. When he returned to Belfast he worked in the Linen Industry and became a member of the Orange Order and the East Belfast Battalion of the UVF. He wrote many letters home and commented on conditions and life around him. In a letter to his Mother 12/03/1916 "we only get five francs a fortnight that is only 4s 2d in our money. And that does not go far when you buy a bit of grub out of it, as they French is not a bit afraid to charge you for anything". He also wrote home for a fellow soldier Johnny McConnel. James survived the war and married Elizabeth Morrow. When James returned to his Loyal Orange Lodge he was asked for all his outstanding dues, he refused and said he was serving his Country, on this point of principle he left the Order. James died on the 30th October 1966 and was buried in Dundonald Cemetery.
