Donaghadee is set to see the return of the Festival Fortnight this August (10th – 24th August) with more than 25 events taking place over two weeks.
The newly launched Festival Fortnight programme, co-ordinated by the Donaghadee Commerce and Development Group, includes activities every day designed to appeal to all ages with thrills and spills on two wheels and four, water based activities, dancing and music.
Details of the full programme are set out in a 16 page newspaper being distributed widely throughout the area during the next week. Details will also be included on the Group’s website www.visitdonaghadee.com.
The Festival begins with the Lifeboat Festival, incorporating the annual raft race, on Saturday 10th August and concludes on 24th August with a packed programme of motorbike trials, a punch and judy show and the very popular Donaghadee Birdman competition where would-be aviators will attempt man powered flight off the harbour in a variety of home made flying machines and outfits in the hope of winning the £1,000 first prize. In the intervening period there will be an Ulster-Scots festival; a Cultural Festival featuring Indian and Chinese entertainment; an autotest organised by the Ulster Automobile Club; a live broadcast by Hugo Duncan and many others.
Looking forward to the Festival, David Cochrane, Chairman of the Commerce and Development Group, paid tribute to the commitment and support received. He said,"In previous years we have held weekend festivals. This year, thanks to the participation of various community organisations, it has been possible to expand this to a full two-week programme and I am very grateful to those clubs and organisations that have come forward with ideas and are organising an event. Festivals of course cost money and this year we have been very fortunate with the level of grants received from Ards Borough Council and the Community Relations Council together with sponsorship from Spectator Newspapers, Pier 36, Centra, Barclay’s Bank, John Minnis Estate Agents, Richard Sweeney, Grace Neills, the Yachtman Bar and The Tivoli Bar. Traders have responded very positively to our invitation to advertise in the Festival newsletter and this has helped reduce the cost significantly. I think the programme offers something for everyone and I hope it will not only encourage our townsfolk to attend the events but also encourage visitors to come to Donaghadee. All we need now is the weather!"
Mayor of Ards, Councillor Stephen McIlveen, said "This is a festival which showcases the best of Donaghadee and Ards Borough Council is pleased to be supporting the fortnight financially through its event sponsorship programme, as well as its Good Relations and Community Development services. We have also been able to contribute directly to the events by staging a band concert as part of the festival fortnight and I am looking forward to two weeks when the town will welcome visitors from near and far."
