Libraries NI and Living Legacies 1914-18 invite you to explore your WW1 ancestors, to record and preserve their stories and memorabilia for the future.  Bring your WW1 objects and artefacts (photographs, letters, diaries etc.) to Mellon Centre for Migration Studies at the Ulster American Folk Park.

Free information and advice for budding family researchers from experts in family history.

A night at the Cinema in 1914

Pupils will have the opportunity to interact with a first person interpretation by a young actor in World War 1 uniform.  There will also be a commentary with screening of A Night at the Cinema in 1914. This is a short film compilation of films made in 1914 which reflect the mood of society then at the outbreak of WW1. There is footage from Emmaline Pankhurst and the suffrage movement which supported the war effort, as well as Charlie Chaplins’s Johnnie (84 mins). This is followed by a screening of WW1 documentary footage of the Battle of the Somme from the Northern Ireland Screen’s Digital Film Archive, The North and South Irish at the Front, Part 2 (16 mins).

The event includes a WW1 presentation + interactive first person interpretation by actors in WW1 uniform and costumes of the period, in association with Drama Studies at QUB and the Living Legacies 1914-1918 Engagement Centre, www.LivingLegacies1914-18.ac.uk.

This is the story of how the people of Ulster and Ireland responded to the war, the different attitudes of leading political figures on the Unionist and Nationalist sides, the reaction of militant republicanism, the fate of young Irishmen on the battlefields of Europe and how events both abroad and in Ireland during this period were to change the course of Irish history.

A collaboration between NIWM and Linen Hall Library

Experts will be assembled at the Linen Hall library to answer questions, give advice and discuss any items bought in. There will be representatives from The Linen Hall Library, the Northern Ireland War Memorial, PRONI Public Records Office of Northern Ireland, and various libraries will be present. There will be one table per organisation. Those taking part so far are as follows:

Bring along any First World War related items that you wish to show us, if we can’t help we will signpost you to other suitable organisations. No valuations can be supplied for items, but if it will fit through the doors and not as big as an Elephant than we would be delighted to welcome you.
