Libraries NIPhoto G Warner image - airships over Ulster talkSpeaker – Guy Warner

Venue : Kilkeel Library

A tantalising piece of hidden history brought to life by aviation historian Guy Warner. He expertly weaves together this fascinating tale of pioneering aviation, anti-submarine warfare in World War One, and the human connection to the first military aviation facility in Ulster. Airships from the mooring-out station at Bentra, Whitehead in County Antrim flew dozens of missions in support of the naval forces based in Larne.

Guy Warner has been a regular contributor to Ulster Airmail, the journal of the Ulster Aviation Society, Aircraft Illustrated, Air Enthusiast, Air Pictorial, Aviation Ireland and Northern Ireland Travel News.

Community Excavation, Grey point Fort Helen's Bay
6th – 24th October 2014 - Free

LivingLegacies 1914-18 Logo (Aug14)2014/10/06 # NIEA Grey Point Fort, Crawfordsburn, Northern Ireland (5)The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) have launched phase 2 of the Defence Heritage Project (DHP) organising a range of community- led engagements and public events.

The main focus of the project is working with the public to record defence heritage features throughout Northern Ireland. The information gathered through the project will be made accessible to the public and become part of the Historic Environment Record helping NIEA to safeguard Northern Ireland's defence heritage through policy and legislation.

As part of the project NIEA will also be conducting a range of community excavations, the first of which is timetabled for 6th-24th October 2014 at Grey Point Fort, Helen's Bay Co. Down. Grey Point Fort is a State Care site in operation in both WW1 and WWII and through the excavation we hope to understand a bit more about the construction phases of the fort and to enhance the visitor experience at the monument. The information uncovered will also be entered into the NIEA Defence Heritage database as part of the ongoing Defence Heritage Project (DHP). The archaeological investigations will be carried out on behalf of the NIEA by the Centre for Archaeological Fieldwork, School of Geography, Archaeology and Palaeoecology, Queen's University Belfast under the co-direction of Ruairí Ó Baoill and Heather Montgomery.

Grey Point Fort is open to members of the public throughout the excavation allowing you the opportunity to witness the dig first hand. Alternatively come to one of our specially organised open days on Saturday 11th and 18th October between 12:00-4:00pm.

11th - 12th October 2014

Beyond the Western FrontCall for papers - 11th-12th October 2014 - National University of Ireland, Maynooth.

Proposals are invited for papers for the third international conference hosted by the Centre for Military History and Strategic Studies. This conference will take place in National University of Ireland, Maynooth, on 11th-12th October 2014.

The conference organisers want to bring together academics and independent scholars working on military operations beyond the Western Front and also on the forces that served in these less well-known campaigns of the First World War. Submissions are encouraged from, but not confined to, those working on the African, Baltic, Balkan, Italian, and Eastern Fronts, and Middle Eastern campaigns, as well as those in the service of colonial troops.

During the conference the Centre for Military History & Strategic Studies, in co-operation with the National Museum of Ireland, will host an exhibition of material related to these campaigns.

We have already received expressions of interest from several international scholars. The conference organisers welcome proposals for panels and individual papers. There will be a panel devoted to new researchers. Proposals for roundtable discussions and poster sessions are also welcome. The centre is a member of the Imperial War Museum’s First World War Centenary Partnership.

Submissions of not more than 200 words should be submitted by 30th April 2014 along with a brief biographical statement to Dr David Murphy at the Centre for Military History & Strategic Studies, National University of Ireland, Maynooth. Email: David.Murphy@nuim.ie

East Belfast and the Great War
3rd October 2014

LivingLegacies 1914-18 Logo (Aug14)2014/10/03 # East Belfast and the Great War (Invite)

‌East Belfast & The Great War are preparing to host the first in a series of First World War Military Antiques Roadshows. The Roadshow will take place between 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm at Willowfield Parish Church on Friday 3rd October, as part of a day-long commemorative event ‘Willowfield and the Great War’. The event will also feature a display of artefacts from War Years Remembered, and an evening programme including a talk from East Belfast & The Great War Project Co-ordinator Jason Burke, as well as music and drama.

Encouraging people from the community to come forward to share their stories and artefacts, project volunteer Jonathan Evershed said,

“A vital part of this project is seeking to understand how the Great War was experienced by the men and women of East Belfast, and central to this are family heirlooms like letters, diaries, photographs and medals. These can help us to tell the very human story of the War.

“Researchers from the Living Legacies 1914-1918 Engagement Centre and the Centre for Data Digitisation and Analysis at Queen’s University Belfast will be on hand to help individuals to interpret wartime objects and artefacts. Using the Centre’s state-of-the-art scanning equipment we will also be able to digitally sample and record objects and artefacts such as photographs, letters, diaries, for those who wish to share in the future preservation of these personal legacies and reminders of the war.

“Once they have been captured digitally, artefacts and stories will be hosted on our website at www.eastbelfastww1.com. We are looking forward to hearing from members of the community, and are grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund for their support, and to Willowfield Parish Church for inviting us to participate in their day of commemoration.”
