As part of the Culture Night 2014 celebrations, PRONI will celebrating the Home Front from the First World War.
Join PRONI for an evening of music, mirth and commemoration of the early days of the First World War. There will be sing-a-long songs with such old favourites as ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’, ‘Mademoiselle from Armentieres’, and ‘We’re here because ...’. There will be readings from ‘The Turret’ the magazine the Mackie’s women workers compiled, a slide show of war-related cartoons and poetry reading from some of the best of the war poets as well as one or two other surprises.

The British army was almost unique among the European armies of the Great War in that it did not suffer from a serious breakdown of discipline or collapse of morale. It did, however, inevitably suffer from disciplinary problems. This book provides the first comprehensive study of discipline and morale in the British Army during the Great War by using a case study of the Irish regular and Special Reserve battalions. In doing so, Timothy Bowman demonstrates that breaches of discipline did occur in the Irish regiments but in most cases these were of a minor nature.
A public event aimed at all those interested in opportunities for interpreting, recording and understanding local heritage of the First World War. A talk by Carol Walker Director of the Somme Museum illustrating the massive changes in women’s roles and rights in the period 1914-18 and their role in World War 1 Part of Ards Borough Council’s programme to commemorate the beginning of the First World War
A First World War themed Conservation Open Day will be held at Newry and Mourne Museum on Saturday 13th September, 10:30 am – 4:00 pm, when members of the public can bring along their First World War items and can get advice on how to care for them. There will be tours of the Museum building by a costumed guide (in First World War uniform) at 10:30 am and 12 noon; a guided tour of the temporary exhibition on the “Local Impacts of the First World War” at 2pm, and a talk from 3pm–4pm by one of Ireland’s leading conservators, Sean Madden. Sean will explain the best methods of caring for historic items. He will explain how to protect them from the damage that heat, light, dust and insects can cause, as well as discussing how to handle them properly, and how to store and display them in a conservation-friendly manner.
