Ireland and Gallipoli‌

The Gallipoli Campaign, known to the Turkish as the Battle of Çanakkale, still remains controversial. France, Britain and its dominion sought to eliminate Turkey from the Great War by landing on the northern bank of the Dardanelles, marching on the Ottoman capital Constantinople to open the Dardanelles sea channel to Russia. A brilliant strategic plan was marred by tactical failure and poor execution. The initial naval attack was repelled and subsequent land campaign also failed at a cost 250,000 allied casualties which led to the invasion force being evacuated in January 1916 after eight months of fighting. This conference seeks to examine this campaign 100 years on with special focus on the experience and role of Ireland and Irish people.

Gallipoli Campaign Centenary to be commemorated at Grey Point Fort, Helen's Bay.

The 100^th anniversary of the Gallipoli Campaign landings is to be commemorated at a special event on Saturday 25 April.

One of the major engagements of the First World War, 25th April 1915 saw the start of the Campaign, fought on the Turkish Gallipoli peninsula, with major casualties on both sides. The date is also known as ANZAC day, a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand whose troops fought in large numbers at Gallipoli.

To commemorate all those who fought and died in the Gallipoli Campaign, the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) is facilitating a symbolic firing of the restored Vickers 6-inch bore gun at 1:00pm on Saturday 25th April. Tours of the sites radio and military museum will take place. The site will be open to the public from 10:00am-5:00pm

In addition, the Ulster Military Vehicle Club will be showcasing a selection of vintage military vehicles on 25th and 26th April 2015.

Connecting Communities Through

Researching First World War Heritage

‌A one-day symposium, ‘Connecting Communities Through Researching First World War Heritage’, to be held at Newcastle University on Thursday 16 April 2015. This event brings together community projects and academic researchers working across the North East, and features a keynote address from Professor Veerle Van Eetvelde on her work on First World War landscapes in Belgium.

We invite anyone interested in the First World War and its heritage to join us at the event. Attendance is free, and lunch and refreshments will be provided. Please contact Emma Short at: fww@ncl.ac.uk to register by Tuesday 31 March 2015.

First World War PG Symposium

A one-day postgraduate symposium to be held at Newcastle University on Wednesday 15 April 2014. This symposium showcases some of the fascinating work being undertaken by postgraduate researchers on the First World War and its aftermath. The centenary of the First World War has prompted an immense amount of research investigating the events of 1914-1918 and the legacies of the War, and postgraduate research in particular is at the forefront of new and exciting directions in First World War studies.

We invite any colleagues, postgraduates and undergraduates interested in the First World War and its aftermath to join us at this event. Attendance free, and a complementary lunch will be provided.
