Remembering 1916

A free public evening of debate on 1916, a year which witnessed two events that have profoundly shaped politics and commemoration in Ireland over the past century.

While the Easter Rising and the battle of the Somme are important historical events in their own right, their significance also lies in how they came to be understood as iconic moments in the emergence of the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland. Hosted by History Ireland editor, Tommy Graham, this Hedge School will explore how these events have been constructed, mythologised and contested over the past one hundred years. Our panel of experts will also consider how we should mark the upcoming centenary of both events. As with all History Ireland Hedge Schools, the audience will be encouraged to contribute to the debate.

Refreshments, and guided tours of the Ulster Museum’s 1916 artefacts in the new Modern History gallery, will be available from 6.15 p.m.

Rediscovering GAA members who fought in the First World War
18th March 2015 from 1.00pm

QFT_logo_HighQualityQFT presents SHADOWS OF THE GREAT WAR: WORLD WAR ONE ON FILM

Film was in its infancy when the Great War broke out - however it too played its part in the war effort, recording and documenting the events of the conflict, relaying news back to those on the home front and keeping the population at home informed, as well as entertained.

Running over the next few months at the Ulster Museum, a season of films and talks will explore how the events and the legacy of the Great War have been depicted on film.

TALK: Wed 18 Mar, 1pm - Rediscovering GAA members who fought in the First World War

Due to the common identification of the Gaelic Athletic Association with the Irish separatist movement during 1916-21, the fact that many of the organisation's members fought and died in WW1 has been long obscured. This talk will explore this hidden history and tell the stories of the Ulster men who might be termed 'forgotten Volunteers'.

2015-03-05 # Gas Mask

To mark the Centenary of the 1st World War, BPW members have produced a body of work to memorialise this historic event in our shared human history. Thematically, our members are portraying any concept linked to WW1, from poetry to propaganda posters, portraying life in the trenches, to depicting battle scenes. It will hopefully inspire, create debate and cause the viewer to reflect on how the past has altered the present and how art can help us contextualise conflict.
