This paper draws upon ongoing research and examines men (and women) from the Northeast of England who served in the armies of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Newfoundland in the First World War; men such as ‘Simpson’ of Gallipoli fame. This is part of a much larger story of ‘Geordie’ migration that started long before 1914.

This is the seventh lecture of the University of Wolverhampton/Western Front Association First World War Centenary Lecture Series. Generously supported by a grant from the WFA, the Series is held at the University of Wolverhampton, and open to the public and will run until 2018. On the 4th February Living Legacies will be hosting a group of women from the Shankill Women's Centre as part of a critical reflection on women's role in the Somme, Easter Rising, and indeed the contemporary experiences of women engaging with community commemorations. Historian and network member Phillip Orr is co-facilitating this event. 

The workshop will begin with a guided tour of the Ulster Museum's World War One exhibition, and will be followed by an interactive session with object-based handling work, and a group discussion on how women are being adequately represented (or not) as part of the Decade of Centenaries. 

The event aims to include local women in processes of reflection and commemoration, and place their experiential knowledge alongside that of traditional academic 'experts' in  destabilising and reimagining the war and its impact today.
