2016/09/15 # Critical Reflections: First World War, 1916 v2‌Northern Ireland & Ireland First World War Centenary Partnership Meetings – Professor Keith Lilley attending on behalf of ‘Living Legacies 1914-18’ AHRC WW1 public engagement centre.

To mark the First World War Centenary, over 3,600 organisations from 59 countries have joined the FWW Centenary Partnership, which is led by IWM (Imperial War Museums) and engaged the public in commemorations through thousands of educational activities.

You are invited to attend this meeting which will enable you to reflect on how your Centenary projects have gone so far in order to shape and inform your future work.

This is a two-day meeting and the programme across the two days will be complementary. You are welcome to attend either or both of the days.

Aims:

  • Encourage critical reflection upon public engagement with commemorations of 1916
  • Enable the sharing of plans to mark forthcoming FWW related anniversaries
  • Provide opportunities for networking and discussion about Partnership working

This meeting is open primarily to members of the FWW Centenary Partnership from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and due to limited capacity, we can only accept two participants per organisation. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

This three-day conference will examine the Home Front during the First World War. It will look at those who were left behind, and explore life and society in the immediate aftermath of the war

The conference will bring together academics, independent researchers, community groups and museum curators, among others, to generate dynamic discussion and networking opportunities. The event provides an opportunity for delegates to showcase recent research, foster new collaborations across the country and between different groups of researchers.

The conference is organised by The National Archives and the Everyday Lives in War Engagement Centre, on behalf of the five national

Themes

The conference will explore four major themes:

  • Life on the home front(s) We are looking for contributions with an international as well as a British angle.
  • Dissent As well as conscientious objection and political agitation, we also want the conference to explore the subtleties of dissent socially, religiously, and culturally.
  • Aftermath We want to explore such issues as cultural memory, as well as immediate matters such as post-war riots, gender relations, food, and housing.
  • The unfamiliar We are interested in exploring the less well-known aspects of dissent and everyday life, including the value of little-used sources and the interpretation of unusual artefacts associated with the First World War.

We encourage proposals that speak to one of these themes from the perspective of any geographical location. Potential topics include, but are not limited to,

In this free talk at the Ulster Museum former BBC Chief News Correspondent and bestselling author, Kate Adie, will chart the move towards equal rights with men that began a century ago and will consider what these women achieved for future generations.

Over 7,000 men and women from the North East of England served in the Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand armies during the First World War. The exhibition concentrates on the stories of around a dozen men who, having travelled thousands of miles to the various Dominions to make new lives, enlisted and fought for their adopted countries.
