Irish Republican Prison Crafts; making memory and legacy

Through this oral history project we have been gathering stories from republican ex prisoners and families in West Belfast on the heritage of making and receiving prison crafts. We are now coming to the end of the project which has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and we want to demonstrate and celebrate the contributions that have been made by all those who so kindly took part. We are indebted to the volunteers who collected the stories and are particularly grateful to the participants who told their stories and so revealing interwoven experiences that help make up our shared past and heritage.

To mark this milestone we would like you to join us at our conference in Crumlin Road Gaol on Wednesday March 14th. The conference will hear from some of those who volunteered on the project and carried out interviews as well as some of those who told their story. There will also be contributions from guest speakers.

International Women’s Day: Women and Medicine during the First World War

To mark International Women’s Day, PRONI will host a half day conference exploring the role of female medical and nursing staff during the First World War. This event will be held on Tuesday 6 March 2018, 10.00 am – 1.00 pm.

The conference will examine the enormous, often unrecognised contribution made by female doctors, nurses and voluntary medical aids during the First World War, at home and abroad. The exhibition, ‘Nurses’ Voices from WW1 – The Northern Ireland Connection’ developed by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) History of Nursing Network NI, will be available to view at PRONI during the conference.

Meeke and the Major

At 7pm sharp on Saturday, 10th March there will be a performance of “Meeke and the Major” in St Patrick’s Church of Ireland, Newtownards Road, Belfast.

Come and hear the story of Private John Meeke MM (36th Ulster Division). A proud Unionist and Orangeman, Meeke embarked on the heroic battlefield rescue of committed Irish Nationalist and Westminster MP, Major William Redmond (16th Irish Division). A tale of bravery and humanity shared through narrative, music and poetry. Learn of the east Belfast connection to this story via a former rector of St Patrick’s.

The event, which is free, is being hosted by ‘Row on Row’, thanks to the support of Urban Villages.
