Our Maritime Heritage

2018-05-25 # Maritime Conference 1On April 27th a conference on the theme of our ‘Our Maritime Heritage’ took place at Cultra Manor. Over 90 delegates attended enjoying ten separate presentations on a variety of variety of maritime themed subjects from Fermanagh cots to Kelly’s coal boats. Living Legacies provided a presence through Project Officer Clare Ablett who was presenting a talk on an archive of letters recently taken into the collections of National Museums NI. This donation recorded the life of local naval officer Bredin Delap. His service in the Royal Navy from 1913-23 provides a vital link to the experiences of sailors in the First World War. Particularly significant is the fact that Bredin was involved in the Battle of Jutland, one of the largest naval battles in history. Clare highlighted the vital work that has been achieved through the partnership between Living Legacies and NMNI through the digitally scanning of Bredins naval uniform and other items helping to bring his story to life for the audience.‌

Mapping the 1916 Battle of the Somme and the actions of the Irish Raised Divisions.

The Battle of the Somme was one of the largest battles that occurred during World War I. It took place near the River Somme in France from 1st July 1916 to 18th November 1916. Attacks along the Somme lines saw some of the largest actions of the Irish Raised Divisions (36th Ulster & 16th Irish) during the battle.

2018-05-16 Mapping the Battle of the Somme‌By using historic battle field maps of the time and modern Geographical Information Systems (GIS), we can help understand the key events of the Irish raised divisions, the following months of the Somme campaign, and help discover evidence of the battle in the modern landscape.

Developed by the GIS Research & Teaching Unit for the The Living Legacies Engagement Centre at the School Of Geography, Archaeology and Paleoecology, Queen's University Belfast.
