Revolution Sha 2020 Boston
Living Legacies’ Dr Rachel Tracey was recently in Boston, Massachusetts, speaking at the 53rd annual conference of the Society for Historical Archaeology. The four-day conference had approximately 1400 attendees, drawn from 39 countries. The overarching theme of the conference was ‘Revolution’, particularly in terms of diversity and inclusivity, in commemoration, rebellion, survivance and resistance. Members were also encouraged to consider some of the revolutions in theory and practice that have occurred more recently. 
Community engagement strategies and restorative justice were key subject matters. Rachel presented on Living Legacies’ extensive catalogue of work over the past six years, particularly on how the Centre’s 
programme of inclusive public engagement and co-produced community projects have played a significant role in negotiating the role of commemoration and identity on the island of Ireland during the Decade of Centenaries (2012-2022). Living Legacies’ particular approach and methodology towards community engagement (supported by the Centre for Data Digitisation and Analysis) and Inclusive Heritage Discourse was discussed to great effect to a packed-out room, in a session that focused on the developments and new directions of Historical Archaeology on the island of Ireland. Lough Erne Spiritual Trail - Sharing Folklore, Histories and Stories! Waterways Ireland in partnership with the Lough Erne Landscape Partnership, will be hosting a community outreach event on Monday 27th January 2020 between 1-8pm at Waterways Ireland HQ, 2 Sligo Road, Enniskillen, BT74 7JY. On this date the Centre for Data Digitisation and Analysis at Queen’s University Belfast will provide an opportunity for the public to engage with their local history by sharing tales and folklore, as well as their memories and stories concerning selected spiritual sites around Lough Erne. Attendees are encouraged to drop in and share their memorabilia and photographs of these sites, along with any stories or folktales they may know. On Tuesday 21st May, The Centre for Data Digitisation & Analysis officially launched the World War One Community Platform at the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland.
This platform was made possible through generous funding from the Arts & Humanities Research Council. We are grateful to our colleagues at the National Lottery Heritage Fund who developed the First World War: Then and Now grant scheme, and supported community research projects into the legacy of the First World War. We are indebted to the many project contributors for making such valued contributions to public understandings of WW1 histories and heritage, and for graciously sharing their research with us and allowing us to use it on our platform.
Thanks also go to the project management, research and design teams – Elaine Reid, David Hardy, Dr Rachel Tracey, Dr Heather Montgomery, Joshua Montgomery and Artisan Web NI – whose combined expertise was vital in bringing this platform to fruition.
