“Living Legacies 1914-18” is one of five UK public engagement centres funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to bring together community and academic researchers to share expertise and research on World War 1 during the war’s centenary (2014-18).

Our focus at Living Legacies is on three particular aspects of research, details of which are here, including the landscapes and archaeology of WW1. We have worked closely with the Historic Environment Division (NI) in developing the Defence Heritage Project (DHP) as a new online crowdsourcing platform, to encourage wider public interest in defence heritage sites in Northern Ireland.

As part of the relaunch of the online Defence Heritage Project, we have also developed this “Action Stations!” web-resource in partnership with RAF100, especially to support RAF100 public outreach activity during 2018 in marking the centenary of the formation of the Royal Air Force.

The Living Legacies team based at Queen’s University Belfast has particular expertise in supporting community groups to engage with aviation heritage in Northern Ireland, and we invite groups wishing to develop projects that explore the legacies of military aviation to get in touch with us. We can offer groups workshops and guidance on researching WW1 defence heritage and its legacies.
