To help you with your fieldwork and recording historic airfield sites and features, here are two useful resources to download and use.

First, there is the Defence Heritage Project handbook, which has been prepared by the Historic Environment Division (HED) to explain the how to record sites such as historic airfields using archival research and fieldwork. There is also information on how to fill out a “Site Record Sheet” which you should use when recording the features found at historic airfields.

Secondly, there is a “Site Record Sheet”, which is a structured form for you to use to describe and record airfield features discovered through your fieldwork and research on-site.

The “Site Record Sheet” form is also available as a digital version, together with further guidance and information on the Defence Heritage Project, using the DHP Web-Mapping Platform here
