At present we are remembering a decade of key historical moments that shaped the history of Northern Ireland and Ireland a century ago. The period from 1912 - 1922 witnessed some dramatic changes. Now, one hundred years on, we are taking time to explore some of the significant events in more detail.

This season we will look at the Irish Convention, which was an initiative by the Prime Minister David Lloyd George who launched it saying that ‘Ireland should try her hand at hammering out an instrument of government for her own people.’

We will also look at the changing politics of the time, exploring the role of women in politics, following the extension of the vote with the Representation of the People Act in February 1918. The extension of the vote under this act made the General Election of 1918 historic in more ways than one and we will explore this election in detail.

In 1917, we also witnessed the Russian Revolutions and how this impacted on World War I, which was still ongoing throughout this period. We will explore this, and the connection with Belfast.

All of these events are free to attend, however, registration is essential and spaces are limited. If you would like to attend any of these events and have any particular access requirements please contact our Good Relations Unit on 028 9027 0663 or email goodrelations@elfastcity.gov.uk

Signs of the Times
Symbols and their Multiple Meanings
Friday 10 November 2017
10.00am – 1.00pm
Ulster Museum Belfast

Poppies are just one of hundreds of symbols we encounter in our lives. Symbols are all around us and have different, often changing, meanings. They can represent belief, identity or ideology. They evoke emotion and can reassure or threaten. People have given meaning to flags and colours, to the Easter lily and the Red Hand and to events such as the Somme and the Easter Rising. Key figures have emerged, like the Maid of Erin and King William III. Hear from historians and commentators as we explore how powerful symbols have played a role in shaping our history. Joe Austin - Chair of the Belfast National Graves Association Sophie Long - Living Legacies Project Officer Philip Orr - Writer and Historian Glenn Patterson - Writer and Commentator Margaret Ward - Feminist Activist and Historian

The Yanks Are Coming! How the AEF prepared for war in 1917/1918
Thursday 9th November 2017 from 1.00pm - 2:00pm
Lecture Theatre at the Ulster Museum
LivingLegacies 1914-18 Logo (Aug14)

In April 1917 the USA faced the same problems as the British Empire had in 1914. A small, professional army had to expand rapidly to meet the demands of mass, industrialised warfare. In training the citizen’s army, two divergent approaches to battle developed. How that issue resolved itself on the battlefield will be explored in this talk.
